Or with appologies to St Francsis.

The prayer of St. Francis...

Make me an instrument of peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

The prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that understand the renewal of life.

It's not hard to find a solution to this prayer issue, IF YOU WANT ONE. The problem is for some people recognizing the existence of spirituality without THEIR God is itself blasfumous.

Here's an example Steven. A Buddhist prayer suitable for this sort of occasion.

May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector for those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A ship for those with oceans to cross
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need.

Actually Buddhists don't pray to a deity. All their prayers would fit the bill as a nonsectarian prayer.

"Buddhists don’t pray to a Creator God, but they do have devotional meditation practices which could be compared to praying. Radiating loving-kindness to all living beings is a practice which is believed to benefit those beings. The sharing of merit is a practice where one dedicates the goodness of one’s life to the benefit of all living beings as well as praying for a particular person."

The reason that non-sectarian prayers are required in the school systems and in public meetings is because, in the past, various religious groups have used the prayer as a kind of power play. True, sometimes only one individual was offended, but maybe there was a lesson to be learned here, that most people have missed. I went to a Christian School, and we had frequent prayer meetings, and I would say that it was a good thing. However, I don't see why a minister or any person appointed to the task can't make a suitable non-sectarian prayer.Even if he doesn't use the word "God" , it should be possible to make a terrific prayer. He might start by saying, for example:

I would like to appeal to the good in you and the good in me, that we find ways to ignore the differences that come between us, and that we find ways to work together, to the benefit of everyone.

I'm am sure that this prayer some might find sadly lacking, but I am not highly trained in theology, or ethics for that matter.

I challenge any of you who read this to create a well-written and sincere prayer following the federal guidelines. Anyone can debunk these rules, but I think that a sincerely religious person could easily find the language for it, and abstain from building sectarian fences in the process.

I am sure that GOD is created by brain chemistry and that is the feelings of Holly Sprit etc. Anyone can pray anyway they like.. even to a big rock up on a mountain and get the same FEELINGS and results. It simply takes a BELIEF that some supernatural bieng is lisening and might actually take action for you. If I go into a Jewish Temple and pray to Ala and invoke to name of Mohammud.. what does that do the Jewish people thier? It insults them and like wise if I went into a Mosque and started with Jewish prayers. Soooo here with our laws we are not supposed to invoke Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Satan for that matter at goverment prayers.

"Prayer is the act of beseeching the almighty to suspend the laws of physics for the sole benefit of an individual who, by his own admission, is not worthy."

Actually 'The Lord's Prayer" is pretty non-sectarian. However; It implies that God is a male figure and some would disagree or say God has NO sex.

I wish it were that easy. It is not going to work with the group in which I am involved. It is all or nothing with some of these people -- one message I got was "if we cannot evoke the name of Jesus in our invocation I am staying home until this is fixed." Non-sectarian is unacceptable to them because they believe that Christianity is the only true religion. The same person told me that Muslims don't believe in God, "they believe in alla [sic] and that is not GOD." Is it the water here? I am from Southern California by way of Northern Virginia and never had this issue anywhere else I have lived.

To make any prayer non-sectarian.. Just say it anyway you like just leave certain words/names out of if. Creator, God whatever is fine but specific deities like Jesus, Buddha are what make a prayer "sect" specific and thereby exclude anyone not of that sect. Here in this country we welcome all religions and shouldn't exclude anyone.
