Business and Politics Don’t Mix

As another election season approaches, I’m reminded of one of my pet peeves. Even though it’s an all too common occurrence, I’m always dumbstruck when I see an office building or storefront plastered with campaign posters. Business owners have the same rights as anyone else to support candidates and causes of their choice, but as the old saying goes, just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

As evenly divided as our country has become politically, by turning your place of business into a campaign billboard, chances are you will alienate roughly half of your prospective customers. People are not any more likely to choose your products or services based simply on the fact that they share your political beliefs, but it’s a good bet they are less likely to buy from you if they don’t.
